Rainton Call Centre Ring in the Fundraising for Red Nose Day

npower’s call centre in Rainton is celebrating another successful year as an official call centre for Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day.

After a full day’s work, nearly 100 npower employees manned 70 dedicated phone lines, taking over 1,000 calls throughout the live event, helping Comic Relief to reach its fundraising total of £73 million.

Staff morale was kept high well into the night, which began at 7pm on Friday and finished at midnight, with live music, pass-the-parcel, raffles, and other party games.

The volunteers, who work at npower offices across the country, got into the spirit of things by donning pyjamas and dressing in red – the theme colour for Comic Relief.

Michael Hewison, event organiser and Customer Service manager in Rainton, said: “Call centres up and down the country play a vital part in televised appeals like Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day. Giving people a quick and easy way to donate helps the entire event to reach its full fundraising potential. Our volunteers were in high spirits all evening, keeping on top of the large number of calls that came in. It was heartening to see everyone come together and the passion that such events bring!”

Alex Cox, a Customer Service coach and top call-taker for the evening, added: “I volunteered to take calls for Comic Relief two years ago and I’m so glad I chose to do it again. Everyone was buzzing with excitement and so happy to be volunteering, even after a full day’s work. The man sat next to me had even travelled from Leeds to do it! There was a singer, loads of food and drinks to keep us going, and constant entertainment. Taking the calls was a privilege, everyone should do it!”

The Red Nose Day volunteering is part of npower’s approach to empower its employees to choose their volunteering, charity and fundraising causes – offering its people the chance to lead on the relationships they build in their communities.

Since 1985, Comic Relief has raised over £1 billion. That money has helped, and is helping, people living incredibly tough lives, both at home in the UK and across the world. For more information, please visit:
